October: The Pink Month

A worldwide yearly campaign happens every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, thousands of organisations from all over the world raise funds, among other activities; to stress the importance of breast cancer awareness research and education and help to create a possible future where those who might develop the disease will have a brighter hope and live well.

The Research

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are:

  • About 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

  • About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).

  • About 40,920 women will die from breast cancer.

  • While black and white women get breast cancer at roughly the same rate, the mortality rate is 42 percent higher among black women than white women.

At this time, there are more than 3.1 million people with a history of breast cancer in the United States. (This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.)

Not Just Women

Breast Cancer is known to be a female-only disease; however each year, around 350 men are diagnosed with breast cancer.  Men with family history of women breast cancer patients in their families are at risk of developing the disease. According to the study led by Professor Anthony Swerdlow, Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, along with the data from Breast Cancer Now Generations Study, 10% of male patients acquired breast cancer through a mutated BRCA2 gene, the cancer gene in women and this then can be carried down through generations.

Get Involved!

Check yourself

Check yourself or have yourself checked by a medical professional. Encourage the women around you to have their breasts checked regularly too. Get the free Know the Symptoms Guide ebook from www.nationalbreastcancer.org for more information.

Wear It Pink

On October 19, it is Wear It Pink Day – the biggest fundraising event of the year for breast cancer awareness and research. Take part of Wear It Pink Day by wearing pink, even just a pink ribbon anywhere you may be, at work, at school, at the coffee shop to raise awareness. Some people will ask you why several people are wearing pink that day or why you are wearing a pink ribbon; that is a chance to share our stories.

Talk about it

Share your story or stories about people you know. Spread the word through social media as well, it only takes a few minutes to share in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Sharing information breaks the stigma that shuns people from relating to breast cancer and its fighters and survivors which in turn, can stop the progress of preventative measures for each person.

Shop and raise funds

Brands, like BodyBlendz and retailers around the globe take part in fund-raising for breast cancer research and support. For most participating companies and outlets, portions of the sales generated for the entire month of October will be donated to various breast cancer research and support organizations. Now is a great time to splurge and also help further the cause.

Of course, you can also just donate directly or start a fund-raiser yourself; whichever path you’ll take they’ll all end up helping the current and future breast cancer patients to live longer and healthier and perhaps, ultimately cancer-free.

The Good News

According to American Cancer Society a woman’s risk of dying from breast cancer has dropped to 39 percent between the late 1980s up to 2015 – this data translates to 300,000 breast cancer deaths prevented during the time frame.

With this kind of positive progress, we must be relentless in uniting and doing our part. Get involved in whichever way you can. This October, think pink and #wearitpink.
